Consciousness

After the walk
The comparison is ours.
After particular worlds, a comparison becomes possible. These are lenses, not laws.
Three layers
Do not collapse them.
The Walk stays particular. This page only becomes honest after enough worlds have been entered.
01 · From this story only
The ancient question
What did this particular culture imagine a human world needed? Stay faithful to each story. Do not make the Sumerian me a caption for Demeter, or the cord a caption for clay.
02 · Across the rooms
Our comparison
Across these different worlds, what kinds of capacities keep appearing? Similarity is not lineage. A pattern that survives misses and a control corpus is still only a pattern we are seeing.
03 · A research hypothesis
Our question
What must a conscious being be able to do to have a world at all? This is not a claim that Sumerians, Greeks, Egyptians, Māori, K’iche’ or anyone else knew phenomenology.
From the rooms already walked
Seven lenses. Not seven laws.
Each lens is a question we can bring back to a story we have already read. If a story does not fit, that is information.
01
Arrival
How does the capacity enter?
Feast and transfer. Theft. Seizure from pain. A rite on empty ground. A mother sitting down. Last sparks thrown into wood. A finding among seers. The stories do not agree on one grammar of gift.
From The Boat, The Fire, The Runes, The Measure, The Grain, The Wind, The Tracks, The Trees, The Speech
02
Carrier / mediator
Who or what brings it?
A minister reciting cargo. A messenger whose mouth is a road. Scribes who were not the named priestess. A goddess standing opposite a king with the same tools. Women and animals keep appearing as mediators.
From The Message, The Voice, The Measure, The Tracks, The Speech
03
Material
What physical thing makes it graspable?
A reed boat. Wet clay patted by a hand. A calcite disk you could hold. Calfskin. A hollow fennel stalk. Seed underground. A mason’s line of flax. Food set down and not eaten. Tracks in silt that can be told apart. Named trees that take a spark. Coarse grain through a sieve. Capacities in these tellings have bodies.

04
Cost
What is paid, lost, suffered or risked?
Nine nights without bread. Labour after an ember. A famine until a daughter is partly returned. A person dies and only copies remain. A table of life refused. Nails of fire spent. The companion abandoned, and a word with no blossom. Punishment, taboo, hierarchy and theft return in the wider census.
From The Runes, The Fire, The Grain, The Voice, The Wind, The Trees, The Speech
05
Charter
What social order, office or institution does the story authorize?
An en-priestess across a new political geography. Kings of Eleusis receiving a rite that cannot be spoken. A king and a goddess stretching a temple before it exists. Not every story is a charter. Do not force the ones that are not.
From The Voice, The Grain, The Measure
06
Transmission
How does knowing outlive the knower?
The mouth fails. Clay carries what the body cannot. The body dies. The voice does not necessarily die with it. A sign is taken in pain. A book is copied in a later century. Speech is found, sifted, and can fail to be shared. Knowing has to be held somewhere.
From The Message, The Voice, The Runes, The Speech
07
Repair
Is world-making actually the repair of something that already failed?
Grain restored after refusal. A house measured because empty ground is not yet habitable. In the wider field: an enclosure against winter, channels against flood, a copy of a worn text, previous peoples who did not hold. This lens is emerging.

What the census keeps producing
A world is not a package.
Not a ladder · Not a grade · Mixed cargo · Maintenance
Not a ladder
The corpus resists the modern idea of civilization as a package of city, writing, state, monument, surplus and progress. The stories keep returning to capacities, not to a package of institutions.
Not a grade
A world is not a grade a people passes. Neighbouring peoples without a given poem still had law, memory, craft and song. The Walk will not imply otherwise.
Mixed cargo
The me remain the founding object because they will not file. Heroism and wickedness. Kindling and extinguishing. Forthright speech and deceit. A human world, in that telling, is not made from one clean category called technology.
Maintenance
A world is not a thing you have. It is something you know how to keep happening.
Maintenance as motion
前人栽树,后人乘凉
Those who came before plant the trees. Those who come after sit in the shade.
01 · Receive
We receive a world we did not make.
02 · Inherit
We inherit capacities for inhabiting it.
03 · Alter
We alter it. Matter becomes transformable. Offices move.
04 · Transmit
We transmit those alterations. Someone else inherits that world.
Our question
What must a conscious being be able to do to have a world at all?
Consciousness currently has a beautiful negative experiment. Avicenna removes the sensed world. Something like I am remains. Fine. There is a self. Now what has to happen for that self to have a world?
What Makes a World?
Appearing is not yet inhabiting.
A self can exist in a question. A world requires relation.
Perhaps having a world requires capacities such as noticing, orienting, remembering, valuing, acting, sharing, transmitting, caring and repairing. The list is ours. It remains a research question, not a test a being or a people passes.
What must conscious beings be able to do to keep one?
What do we have to carry forward for there to still be a world after us?
